rev. Charles Foster Johnson - pastors for texas children
Rev. Charles Foster Johnson is our guest speaker for August 2.
Charles Foster Johnson is the Executive Director of Pastors for Texas Children, a Texas non-profit organization that mobilizes the faith community to support and advocate for public education. He also serves as co-pastor of Bread, a new faith community in Fort Worth, and as Spiritual Director of the Tarrant County Spiritual Care Network.
Rev. Johnson founded Pastors for Texas Children in 2013 in response to a growing need for community support and advocacy for over 5.4 million Texas public school children. The organization has grown exponentially over the past five years - now including around 2,000 clergy and lay leaders in it's membership. Conducting over 500 meetings statewide, Johnson and PTC leaders have been instrumental in influencing communities that then urge their legislators to enact policy that is supportive of schoolchildren. Since it's inception, PTC has spread to Oklahoma (Pastors for Ok Kids), Tennessee (Pastors for Tennessee Children), and Kentucky (Pastors for Kentucky Children) - with ongoing plans to spread to many other states.
Throughout his over thirty-five year pastoral ministry he has served churches in Mississippi, Kentucky and Texas, including Second Baptist Church of Lubbock where he led in a complete church relocation, and Trinity Baptist Church of San Antonio where he helped build a multi-cultural and multi-racial community of faith among the 6000 member congregation. He served interim pastorates with Immanuel Baptist Church of Nashville, Broadway Baptist Church of Fort Worth, and First Baptist Church of Brownwood.
He is a frequent preacher and speaker in university, church and business circles. He has written for numerous publications, and has made guest appearances on several cable network news shows. He is involved in civic and denominational life, and was named “Baptist of the Year” by the Baptist Center for Ethics in 2004. He was inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers of Morehouse College in 2008.
He is married to Jana, has three children, and two grandchildren. He enjoys reading, movies, cooking, backpacking, hunting, and spending time at his ranch in Desdemona, Texas. You may read his blog at www.charlesfosterjohnson.com and find him on Facebook and Twitter.
